Credit Utilization Calculator
Your ratio, your rating, and exactly how much to pay down to improve your score.
A credit utilization calculatordivides your total credit card balances by your total credit limits to produce the ratio that makes up roughly 30% of your FICO score — the second-biggest factor after payment history. This tool computes both your overall utilization and each card's individual ratio, then tells you the exact dollar amount to pay down to hit the 30%, 10%, and 1% thresholds credit scoring models reward.
How Credit Utilization Is Calculated
Utilization is simply your reported balance divided by your credit limit, expressed as a percentage. Scoring models apply this formula both in aggregate (all revolving accounts combined) and per individual card.
Utilization Ratio
Total Balance ÷ Total Limit × 100
Payment to Hit Target
Balance − (Limit × Target%)
| Ratio | Score Impact |
|---|---|
| 0–10% | Excellent — optimal range for top-tier scores |
| 10–30% | Good — generally considered the safe threshold |
| 30–50% | Fair — starts to weigh down your score |
| 50–75% | Poor — significant negative impact |
| 75%+ | Very Poor — treated as maxed-out by most models |
Example: $3,300 in combined balances across $16,000 in combined limits is 20.6% utilization (Good). Paying down $1,300 brings the ratio to 12.5%; paying down $1,700 gets you into the 10% (Very Good) tier.
⚠️ Expert Pro-Tip
Pay before your statement closes, not just before the due date. Card issuers typically report your balance to the credit bureaus on your statement closing date — often 3 weeks before the payment due date. A balance you plan to pay off in full will still get reported (and count against your utilization) if you wait until the due date. Pay it down a few days before the statement closes for the ratio to reflect the lower balance.
