Stock Profit Calculator

Gross profit · Net after tax · ROI · Capital gains tax · Tax loss harvesting

A stock profit calculator computes your net profit and ROI after accounting for commissions and capital gains taxes. This tool applies 2026 IRS rates: 0–20% for long-term gains (held >1 year) and your ordinary income rate(up to 37%) for short-term gains — the same calculation you'll see on your Schedule D and Form 8949 at tax time.

How Stock Profit Is Calculated

Stock profit starts with your cost basis (what you paid) and proceeds (what you received), then subtracts commissions and taxes. The IRS requires you to report gains on Schedule D using these exact formulas.

Gross Profit = (Sell Price × Shares − Sell Fee) − (Buy Price × Shares + Buy Fee)
Tax Owed = Gross Profit × Capital Gains Rate
Net Profit = Gross Profit − Tax Owed
Holding Period2026 Tax Rate
Short-term (≤ 1 year)Ordinary income rate: 10–37%
Long-term (> 1 year), income ≤ $47,0250%
Long-term, income $47,026–$518,90015%
Long-term, income > $518,90020% (+ 3.8% NIIT)

Example: Buy 100 shares at $100, sell at $150, hold 18 months, 15% long-term rate. Gross profit = $5,000. Tax = $750. Net profit = $4,250. Net ROI = 42.5%. The same trade held only 11 months at 22% bracket: tax = $1,100. Net profit = $3,900 — you lose $350 just by selling too early.

💡 Expert Pro-Tip

The 366-day rule is the single easiest tax move for most investors. Waiting one extra day past the 1-year mark converts a 22–37% short-term gain into a 0–20% long-term gain. On a $10,000 gain in the 22% bracket, that's a $700–$3,700 tax saving for doing literally nothing. Combined with tax loss harvesting — selling underwater positions before year-end to offset gains — active investors can reduce their effective tax rate on investments to near zero in most years. Use this calculator to model both sides before you sell.
